MGMT | Kids

Watch MGMT grace the US Open Music Stage this afternoon at 5:30 pm! Surfer Blood is already on! Don’t miss any of the action by checkin out the live webcast!

Yesterday was easily the biggest and best day thus far at the 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing. Storms off the coast of Mexico created 5-6 footers, the biggest waves the surfers had seen all week, and they sure took advantage. In Round 4 of the Men’s Pro, three surfers hit scores over 16, capped by Kelly Slater’s exceptional 18.77 set. The Women’s Junior Pro was dwindled down to its final four as four Nike riders, Lakey Peterson, Coco Ho, Malia Manuel and Laura Enever punched their ticket for today’s final. To top it all off, Jimmy Eat World and Dead Country put on an incredible show for the fans on the US Open Music Stage, setting the tone for an epic weekend.
Today, the Junior Men and Junior Women wrap up their competitions, the Pacifico Noseriding Contest kicks off and the WPS All-Stars make an appearance in a highly anticipated expression session. After practice sessions all week, the Converse Coastal Carnage Qualifiers and BMX Jam Sessions kick off today creating a full slate for action sports enthusiasts. MGMT and Surfer Blood close out the evening in what will be one of the top concerts to hit Southern California all summer.
MUST-WATCH ACTION
Men’s US Open Pro R5H1 – 9:02 am
Kolohe Andino (USA) / John John Florence (HAW)
Arguably the two top young guns and the only two remaining double threats square off with a quarterfinal bid up for grabs. Both Kolohe, the local phenom and John John, the Hawaiian, have been two of top performers all week and are considered serious threats in both the Men’s Junior Pro and Men’s Pro.
Women’s US Open Pro QtrH1 – 10:04 am
Lakey Peterson (USA) / Laura Enever (AUS)
Lakey Peterson’s 15.50 in Round 3 of the Women’s Pro, which propelled her straight into today’s Quarterfinal matchup was the highest scoring heat by any woman at the 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing… until Laura Enever posted the exact same score in yesterday’s Junior Pro semifinal battle. All eyes will be on the two in today’s battle.
WPS All-Stars Expression Session – 1:41 pm
Kelly Slater / Dane Reynolds / Taj Burrow / Joel Parkinson / Julian Wilson / Rob Machado / Alejo Muniz / Andy Irons (Honorary Spot)
For fifty minutes, the top surfers in the world will hit the Huntington Beach waves. For filmers and photogs it’s one of the top free-ride sessions of the year. For fans, it’s surfing’s Slam Dunk Contest, Home Run Derby and Best Trick Session all wrapped into one. It’s really a can’t miss event.
MATCHUP OF THE DAY
Men’s US Open Junior Pro Finals – 2:53 pm
To Be Determined
We have no idea who will be featured in today’s Men’s Junior Pro final, and we’re still willing to call it the Matchup of the Day. The Junior Pro has been one of the most excited contests all week. Right now, it’s down to eight surfers with Conner Coffin, Tanner Hendrickson, Filipe Toledo and Keanu Asing battling for two spots in Semifinal 1 while Kolohe Andino, Dylan Goodale, John John Florence and Colin Moran going to battle in heat 2. With the waves hitting the beach in full force, expect the young guns to put on an aerial display. The future is bright for Men’s surfing and these kids plan on stealing the show this afternoon.

Celebrity Sighting (Taken with Instagram at 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing)

Yesterday was a huge day at the 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing. 80,000+ of you came out to see the top surfers in the world shred apart the Huntington surf as Round 2 of the Men’s Pro and Round 4 of the Women’s Pro went in the books. The Skate and BMX Parks filled up with both riders and fans while The Sounds closed out the evening on the US Open Music Stage after an exciting Hurley Walk the Walk National Finals. Congratulations to Grossmont High for taking the crown.
Coming up today, the Men’s Pro gets narrowed down to 12 riders in the morning and then again to 8 by the afternoon with the Women’s Junior Pro making a return for the semifinals. This afternoon, Jimmy Eat World and Dead Country rock the music stage but first we’ve got another full slate of surfing:
MUST-WATCH ACTION
Men’s US Open Pro R3H7 – 7:30 am
Jesse Mendes (BRA) / Kolohe Andino (USA)
The Men’s Junior Pro re-fires back up tomorrow, but that doesn’t mean you need to wait to watch the next generation of surfing hit the HB waves. 17-year old American Kolohe Andino looks to continue his torrid ride through the 2011 Nike US Open in the first heat of the day against 18-year old Brazilian Jesse Mendes.
Men’s US Open Pro R3H12 – 10:05 am
Miguel Pupo (BRA) / John John Florence (HAW)
Talking about young guns, you can’t leave out John John Florence, who’s 16.90 in the Men’s Junior Pro earlier this week has still been one of the biggest scoring heats of the week. The 18-year old from Hawaii looks to punch through to the Round of 12 facing tough competion from 19-year old Brazilian Miguel Pupo.
Men’s US Open Pro R4H3 – 11:38 am
Kolohe Andino (USA) / Dane Reynolds (USA) / Yadin Nicol (AUS)
**updated after all 3 a.m. heats today**
Kolohe Andino has been simply remarkable this 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing. Not only has Andino advanced through to semifinals in the Jr. Men’s competition but he has also become a legitmate contender for the Men’s Pro crown. Meanwhile, Dane Reynolds has to be viewed as the contest favorite after his absurd 17.43 in Round 2 yesterday.
Women’s US Open Junior Pro SemiH1– 12:40 pm
Pauline Ado (FRA) / Coco Ho (HAW) / Lakey Peterson (USA) / Leila Hurst (HAW)
Pauline Ado and Lakey Peterson have easily been the standouts of the Women’s Junior Pro this week at the 2011 Nike US Open. They also haven’t had to match up with top-seeded Coco Ho. Two winners head through to the finals and two winners head home.
MATCHUP OF THE DAY
Men’s US Open Pro R4H2 – 11:07 am
Taj Burrow (AUS) / Kelly Slater (USA) / Tanner Gudauskas (USA)
Two of the top three remaining surfers square off in the most star-studded heat of the afternoon. All three riders, 10-time World Champ Kelly Slater, 6th-ranked Taj Burrow and San Clemente-local Tanner Gudauskas have all been riding like true title contenders. We expect this one to go down to the wire!
